Starlit Adventures is one of the few successful platforming games wherein its sales outweigh the overall budget to make the game. Ever since its release a few years back, it is now on various platforms, including the PS4, portable devices, and now, the PC. So, is it worth getting Starlit Adventures? Let’s find out.
Due to its somewhat childish style, Starlit Adventures may go unnoticed by the vast majority of the public, after all it looks like a game made by Discovery Kids. But it can be quite challenging if you don't pay attention. As I said before, the objective of the game is to guide Bo and Kikki through the levels, in which the player must collect gems and stars, and these will unlock more levels and worlds ahead.
The game boasts up to four players co-op on the same screen. I’ve played this game with my wife on our TV and I have to say that the game doesn’t feel optimized for two players, let alone four. When one player moves lower than the other, the screen doesn’t zoom out, and instead the slower player is just not seen on the map. You do get teleported in if the other player reaches a checkpoint, but this can lead to a player getting killed because you couldn’t tell where you were. Then if either player dies, you both respawn to the last checkpoint, potentially paying a token or two for the privilege.
This cute platform adventure is as much about getting to the end of each stage as it is the costume you wear to get there. Each level has; jewels hidden behind destructible blocks, stars to find, monsters to kill, keys to collect and sticker packs to grab. This is the point where the game deviates from its entry level player model, as a lot of these collectables require planning and skill to collect.
The character designs and mechanics may seem like we’ve seen them before. Rather, what makes Starlit Adventures so fun to play is the levels. When it comes to well-crafted level design, we think of Starlit as one of the games that do justice to that. From the fixed and premade levels in the story mode to the jumbled challenges, Starlit Adventures excels in challenging but rewarding level clearing.
Costumes are unlocked through Tokens, which can be obtained in-game or through cash purchases. Tokens also allow you to buy more sticker packs, thus speeding up the task of finishing the album. There are also Challenges and Infinite Tower modes: the first is separated by costumes, with a journey of levels designed to make you split your head wearing a certain costume; the Infinite Tower is like an arcade, in which you have to go down as far as possible before being knocked out.
Still, it’s hard not to feel that Starlit Adventures doesn’t really belong on Xbox One, or any other console for that matter. With its small play-area and microtransactions, as well as its somewhat muddled multiplayer gameplay which I can imagine becoming less fun with more players, you definitely don’t get the full experience.
